This year got off to a great start when Bert Blyleven was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame back in January. Just a few weeks after that, we learned another one of our fans was going to be a Hall of Famer. On April 2nd, Hacksaw Jim Duggan will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
Blyleven was born 3500 miles away, in The Netherlands. However, Hacksaw Jim Duggan grew up only about 40 miles away from Major League Wiffleball headquarters. Duggan is from Glens Falls, NY, which is also the home town of BYU standout basketball guard Jimmer Fredette. Former Major League pitcher John Cerutti, and my former next door neighbor, Mr. Gedney also lived in Glens Falls. By comparison, Blyleven comes from the same country as painter Vincent van Gogh, supermodel Frederique van der Wal, and the best looking jerseys in soccer.
If you play wiffleball, there’s a good chance you have followed wrestling at some point in your life. So in honor of the first WWE Hall of Famer that is a fan of wiffleball, the next time you step into the batter’s box, leave the wiffleball bat behind, grab a 2-by-4, stick up your thumb, and yell, “Hoooooo!” Sure, everyone will think you’re crazy, but it’s good for a laugh. If you don’t want to risk ruining your batting stats, maybe have a Hacksaw style “Hooooooome Run Derby” instead.
If that’s not your thing, keep throwing curveballs that would make Bert Blyleven jealous. You can’t go wrong either way.
Spring has only just arrived, but it looks like 2011 is going to be a great year for wiffleball and wiffleball fans.
